A Spanish count honoured in Montreal
Landed in Montreal after renouncing wealth and nobility out of love for his sweetheart, he became the first to grow cantaloupe for personal consumption. Mr. d’Alcantara expanded from there and became a Quebec horticultural entrepreneur and pioneer. Carlos d’Alcantara Park was inaugurated in the Fall of 2013 in his honour.
“Carlos-d’Alcantara Park is the crown jewel of this innovative housing project, a convenient and affordable answer to the needs of hundreds of families that have chosen to live in Montreal,” said the city’s mayor Laurent Blanchard. The City of Montreal invested $3.6 million to develop a complete urban park meeting the needs of residents. Complementary work was done in 2014 to finalize the 45,000 m² park. The planting of 600 trees and plants served as a fitting final touch to the park.
